Marilou Braswell
Marilou Braswell's favorite quote is:
"Live your life in such a way that when your feet hit the floor in the morning, Satan shudders and says.... "Oh No....she's awake!!"
Raised in the beautiful New England town of Bethel, Connecticut, Marilou's family moved to Athens, GA for her teenage years. There she quickly acquired a southern drawl and although she played softball, basketball and soccer up north, the only thing offered at her school was cheerleading.
After cheering in high school she became a physical education major at UGA where she was on the gymnastics team her first two years of college. Also, while at Campus Crusade for Christ her freshman year at the University of Georgia, Marilou realized she had a "religion" but not a "relationship" with Jesus Christ. She asked Him into her heart and so started her spiritual journey. The next 3 years, Marilou cheered for the Dawgs and was a two year captain and NCA College All-American her senior year. She was an active member of FCA in college.
Matt Braswell, an All Conference offensive lineman for the Bulldogs married Marilou on December 9th of his junior year at UGA. He went on to play football for the Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos where their daughter, Laci Ann was born. Two years later in Athens, their son Beau Matthew arrived.
After coaching high school cheerleaders and teaching PE at the Lovett School in Atlanta for six years, Marilou was hired to return to her alma mater, the University of Georgia, as the head cheerleading coach in 1993 where she coached until 2004. She then went on to be the Dean of Women at Whitefield Academy in Atlanta. She is currently the National Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes cheerleading ministry.
Marilou and Matt have been married 30 years. They live in her hometown of Athens, GA. Their daughter Laci is married to Adam Nelson and she is in her 3rd year of law school at the University of Virginia. Adam is a three time Olympian in the shot put and he has won two silver medals. Their son Beau lives in Atlanta. The highlight of Marilou's year has been the birth of their first grandchild, Caroline Grace Nelson.
Marilou's favorite verse is: "These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me you might have peace. In this world you will have tribulation, but be of good CHEER, for I have overcome the world!
